The Barrows Green Pub derives its name from the Barrows or burial grounds in the surrounding area. It lies on the main A65 road going into Kendal 3.5 miles to the North, and down to Gatebeck and Endmoor in the South. Surrounding areas or villages are know as Sedgwick, Stainton, Natland, Summerlands and Halfpenny. For many years the organisation Barnados had a residence for children near by. Barrows Green lies directly beneath the 1000ft hill or mountain known to locals as "Helm" where there was an old Roman fort overlooking Kendal. It is a beautiful area and from the top of the Helm you can see the Landales, Coniston Old Man, the Kentmere fells, the Howgills, Farleton Knott and the Morecambe Bay estuary including Arnside and Grange. The pub has had a mixed history of popularity, but in recent years there has been a good clientele. Food has varied, and when Paul was in charge the pub came runner up in the national competition for the best food in Britain. The surrounding Barrows Green hamlet houses not more than 10 houses, and people need to drive to the Inn, it often being too far to walk. Cricketers often have frequented the pub after matches, but the customers often change as they get older, and when people have had families and have moved on, so the customers have changed. At the moment the pub is being built up in popularity by Ann (who likes to be called Anna). She has run a pub in Spain for over 20 years, and is now returning to her roots to enjoy England once more. When the Strickland Arms closed in around 1999 customers from Sedgwick were seen the Barrow Green, and there is also another Inn called the Station Inn at Oxenholme (near the Euston-Glasgow main line), and the two pubs vie for the local custom. There is no accommodation for visitors in the Punch Bowl and the landlord lives over the pub. However there is a beer garden and other seating outside and it is a good place for workers to drive from Kendal for lunch. For a map of the area, click on this link |
